Learning from Trump's crushing defeat

President Trump’s policies have made life harder for the people. The fact that the Trump administration—which implemented policies that caused hardship for the people, such as rising prices and soaring gas prices—was dealt a crushing blow is proof that American democracy is alive and well.

In contrast, in Japan, the far-right Liberal Democratic Party has held power for a long time and has consistently pursued policies that cause hardship for the people. It has actively driven the yen lower to benefit major exporters. I recall government officials explaining the so-called “trickle-down” theory—that if major exporters make profits, that money will eventually trickle down to the people—but people’s lives have never actually improved.

Furthermore, President Trump, in lockstep with Israel’s Netanyahu, launched a war against Iran. As a result, oil and naphtha became difficult to obtain, leading not only to skyrocketing prices but also to severe shortages in Japan.

It was Japan’s Prime Minister Takaichi who was fawning over President Trump and trying to curry favor with him. No matter what President Trump did, she would respond with “Yes, yes…,” acting as if she were his subordinate. If told to buy American military supplies, she bought them; if told to strengthen military capabilities, she drastically increased defense spending; and if told to import potatoes, she is working to make that happen.

Even though they knew that complying with President Trump’s wishes would make life difficult for the Japanese people, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) administration has absolutely submitted to American demands.

Regrettably, even though the Liberal Democratic Party—a far-right party—pursues such policies, the Japanese people continue to cast their votes for candidates from the LDP and the parties that pander to it.

This highlights the difference between American citizens and the Japanese people. In short, I believe this reflects the fact that democracy in Japan is still immature, and that people are not independently scrutinizing political developments.

Within the Liberal Democratic Party, a proposal has been put forward to set Japan’s defense spending (military expenditure) at 70–80 trillion yen over a five-year period starting in fiscal year 2027, in accordance with U.S. demands. Since it may not be possible to secure such a massive sum, there is also discussion about imposing tax increases on the public.

Even so, will the Japanese people continue to support the Liberal Democratic Party, a far-right party?
