アメリカの血塗られた歴史（１） America's blood-stained history（１）

 　石油利権を狙って、トランプ政権が、国際法を無視して、帝国主義的な侵略をベネズエラに対して行った。世界は、こうした軍事行動を厳しき批判すべきである。プーチンがウクライナに侵攻したことを批判したように、こうした大国が軍事力を使ってみずからに従わせようとする事態は、批判されなければならないし、同時に許されるべきではない。

　しかしトランプ政権のみならず、アメリカ合州国は、このような侵略行動を、建国前から行っていた。アメリカ合州国がそうした国家であることを、この際、縷々記していこうと思う。

　なお、ジョン・ダワーが著した『アメリカ　暴力の世紀』（岩波書店）には、トランプという人物について記された個所があるので、それを紹介しよう。

　 「世界で最も強力な国家を指導するにふさわしい知性も気質も備えていない」「読書をしない」「物事の詳細を知ろうとする忍耐力を全くもっていないし、物事の正確さや真実を尊重することもない」「注意力は薄弱」「英語の表現はとりわけ粗野である」「歴史を理解する能力に欠ける」「歴史に対する興味もない」「人種主義は露骨で、女性を侮蔑することにも喜
びを感じている」「他人と共感するということができない」「科学と知的作業をバカにし」
「「社会正義」というのは、彼の政治用語においては軽蔑すべき言葉なのである。「国際
主義」も同じように扱われている」

　以上である。そういう人物を、国家のリーダーにしたアメリカ国民の資質も疑われるべきである。

　さてヨーロッパ人が新大陸に来る前、アメリカの広大な大陸には、すでに多くの人が住んでいた。

　 アメリカ先住民は、1万数千年前にアメリカ大陸へ進出し、紀元前9000年頃までには南米南端に到達していた。彼らは、狩猟、漁労、採集、そしてトウモロコシ、タバコなどの栽培をおこなっていた。現在のアメリカ、カナダには、200～1000万人が暮らしていた。言語は約400あったが、文字は使用されていなかった。

　 1492年 コロンブス（イタリア人ではあるが、スペインの経費により航海した）の第1次航海を契機にして、以後、スペインの中南米侵出が始まった。
　1497年には、 ジョン・カボット（イギリス）、北米探検。
　1499年 アメリゴ・ヴェスプッチ（イタリア）、南米沿岸探検。
　1587年 ジョン・ホワイト（イギリス）らが、ロアノーク島に入植したが、放棄された（「失われた植民地」、現在のノースカロライナ州）
　1607年 ヴァージニアにジェイムズタウンがつくられる。イギリス最初の植民地であった。　　なお、ジェイムズという名は、ジェイムズ1世（スチュアート朝）にちなむ。
　1619年 ヴァーニジア植民地議会が開設された。この年、黒人が最初に輸入された。ヴァーニジアは、Virgin Queenエリザベス1世にちなむ。
 

　その後、 ヨーロッパ各地から新大陸への入植が行われた。植民地を建設したのは、スペイン、フランス、イギリス、オランダ、スウェーデンであった。

 The Trump administration launched an imperialist invasion against Venezuela, disregarding international law in pursuit of oil interests. The world must severely condemn such military actions. Just as Putin's invasion of Ukraine was criticized, situations where major powers attempt to force compliance through military force must be condemned and, at the same time, should not be tolerated.

　However, it is not only the Trump administration; the United States of America has engaged in such aggressive actions since before its founding. I intend to detail here, at this juncture, the nature of the United States as such a nation.

Incidentally, John Dower's book, America: A Century of Violence (Iwanami Shoten), contains passages describing the figure of Trump, which I will introduce here.

　 “He possesses neither the intellect nor the temperament to lead the world's most powerful nation.” “He does not read.” “He has absolutely no patience for details and no respect for accuracy or truth.” “His attention span is weak.” “His English is particularly crude.” “He lacks the ability to understand history.” He has no interest in history. His racism is blatant, and he takes pleasure in disparaging women. He is incapable of empathy with others. He scorns science and intellectual work. In his political vocabulary, “social justice” is a term to be despised. “Internationalism” is treated similarly.

That is all. The character of the American people who made such a man their national leader must also be questioned.

　Now, before Europeans arrived in the New World, the vast American continent was already inhabited by many people.

　 Native Americans had migrated to the American continent over ten thousand years ago, reaching the southern tip of South America by around 9000 BCE. They engaged in hunting, fishing, gathering, and cultivating crops like corn and tobacco. Between 2 and 10 million people lived in what is now the United States and Canada. They spoke approximately 400 languages but did not use writing.

　 1492: Columbus's (Italian, though funded by Spain) first voyage marked the beginning of Spain's expansion into Central and South America.
　1497: John Cabot (English) explored North America.
　1499: Amerigo Vespucci (Italian) explored the South American coast.
　1587: John White (English) and others settled on Roanoke Island, but the colony was abandoned (“The Lost Colony,” present-day North Carolina).
1607: Jamestown was established in Virginia. It was England's first colony. The name James was derived from James I (Stuart dynasty).
　1619: The Virginia Colony Parliament was established. This year also saw the first importation of Black people. Virginia was named after the Virgin Queen Elizabeth I.

Subsequently, colonization of the New World spread from various parts of Europe. Colonies were established by Spain, France, England, the Netherlands, and Sweden.
