『世界 名画の旅』1 Picasso Blue

 　亡くなった母の書棚に、『世界　名画の旅』1（朝日新聞社）があった。1985年刊行、もう40年前である。価格は2400円。なかなか高い。ぱらぱらと眺めると、印刷された絵画はなかなか美しい。

　わたしも憶えている。『朝日新聞』日曜版に連載されていた。名画と、それについて書かれた名文。といっても、当時はそれが名文であるとは思っていなかった。本多勝一や外岡秀俊関係の本を読んでいて、朝日新聞の疋田という人は、かなり凄い記者であったことを知った。

　最初の文は、疋田が書いている。ピカソの「青の時代」についてである。ピカソの絵には、「青の時代」があった。

　「青の時代」を書くために、疋田はバルセロナに行った。そしてピカソ美術館に足を運んだ。その後、疋田はマラガに飛んだ。そして思った、「青の時代」の青は、地中海の色ではなかったか、と。

　わたしもスペインに行ったことがある。夏だった。バルセロナ、グラナダ、マドリッドを訪れた。

　バルセロナでは、わたしもピカソ美術館に入った。絵はがきなどを購入した。しかしあまり記憶はない。それよりも、ミロ美術館の方が記憶に残っている。そこで購入したものは、今も使っている。また友人がバルセロナにいたので、彼の車で深夜まであちこち連れて行ってもらった。売笑婦が立っているというところも見せられた。

　いやそんなことよりも、ピカソの「青の時代」の青は何であったか、である。

　スペインに降り立って、わたしは空の青さに驚いた。クリアな青。また太陽に照らされた土の色も濃いと思った。 クリアな土色。強い太陽の光は、すべてのものをクリアに見せる。

　わたしには、ピカソの青は、あのクリアな青が影響を与えているのではないかと思う。 

　マドリッドでは、ゴヤの絵をたっぷりとみた。スペインへの旅の目的は、ゴヤの絵を見るためであった。そのために、堀田善衛の『ゴヤ』をしっかりと読んでいった。

　『世界　名画の旅』の発刊が40年前、わたしがスペインを訪ねたのは、30年ほど前である。 

 On my late mother's bookshelf sat A Journey Through the World's Great Paintings, Volume 1 (Asahi Shimbun Publishing). Published in 1985, it's already forty years old. The price was 2,400 yen. Quite expensive. Leafing through it, the printed paintings are quite beautiful.

　I remember it too. It was serialized in the Asahi Shimbun Sunday edition. Famous paintings, accompanied by famous essays about them. Though, back then, I didn't think of them as famous essays. Reading books related to Katsuichi Honda and Hidetoshi Sotooka, I learned that this reporter Hikita from the Asahi Shimbun was quite an amazing journalist.

The first essay was written by Hikita. It was about Picasso's “Blue Period.” Picasso's paintings had a “Blue Period.”

To write about the “Blue Period,” Hikita went to Barcelona. He visited the Picasso Museum. After that, Hikita flew to Málaga. And he thought, wasn't the blue of the “Blue Period” the color of the Mediterranean Sea?

　I've been to Spain too. It was summer. I visited Barcelona, Granada, and Madrid.In Barcelona, I also went to the Picasso Museum. I bought postcards and such. But I don't remember much about it. What sticks in my memory more is the Miró Museum. I still use the things I bought there. Also, a friend of mine was in Barcelona, so he drove me around until late at night. He even showed me the places where prostitutes stood.

　But more than that, what was the blue of Picasso's “Blue Period”?

Upon landing in Spain, I was struck by the sky's blue. A clear blue. I also thought the color of the sunlit earth was deep. A clear earth tone. The strong sunlight made everything appear clear.

To me, Picasso's blue seems influenced by that clear blue. 

In Madrid, I saw plenty of Goya's paintings. My purpose for traveling to Spain was to see Goya's work. For that reason, I had thoroughly read Hotta Yoshie's ‘Goya’.

The publication of ‘Journey Through the World's Great Paintings’ was 40 years ago; my visit to Spain was about 30 years ago.
